Fast Facts About Osteopathic Medical Education

Information for Researchers

Conducting and supporting research related to osteopathic medical education are central components of AACOM’s Strategic Plan.

Osteopathic Medical Education Research Institute

To advance osteopathic medical education research, AACOM worked with the Center for the Advancement of Healthcare Education and Delivery (C-AHEAD) to form the Osteopathic Medical Education Research Institute (OMERI).  The Osteopathic Medical Education Research Institute (OMERI) is a non-profit organization formed through the joint efforts of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) and the Center for the Advancement of Healthcare Education and Delivery (C-AHEAD). The sole purpose of this organization is to support Osteopathic Medical Education Research, with a specific focus on collaborative research across osteopathic medical education programs.  OMERI supports its own Institutional Research Board (IRB) and provides consultation for research design and implementation.

Osteopathic Research Center

AACOM also supports the Osteopathic Research Center (ORC) at the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth, which focuses on clinical osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) research.  Representing the osteopathic medical profession, the ORC seeks to expand private and public funding for local and multi-center OMM research projects; enhances research partnerships among basic scientists and clinical specialists; supports nationwide collaborative OMM research; and works to publish research findings in well-recognized, national, peer-reviewed clinical research journals. ORC’s goal is to have a positive impact on U.S. health care policy and practice.

Federal Programs Supporting Research

AACOM’s Office of Government Relations provides ongoing information to osteopathic medical educators and practitioners about federal programs that support research efforts.
