How Do Medical Student Self-Assessments Compare With Their Final Clerkship Grades?

Patrice Weiss et al.

Medical Teacher
August 2005, Vol. 27, Issue #5, pg. 445-449.

Review by: Linda Heun, Ph.D. <lheun@aacom.org>

The authors discuss the relationship between the ability to do accurate self assessment and the following important physician outcomes: be self-reflective, identify areas of improvement, and determine if a referral is appropriate. 47 three-year medical students were asked to complete a self-assessment on their fund of knowledge, personal attitude, clinical problem solving skills, written/verbal skills, and technical skills after a six-week ob/gyn rotation. Outcomes suggested that students were better at assessing their own technical and written/verbal skills than their fund of knowledge and personal attitudes. They suggest that the ACGME Core Competency Curriculum should begin at the medical student level.
