Appraising Qualitative Research Articles in Medicine and Medical Education

Luc Cote & Jean Turgeon.

Medical Teacher
January 2005, Vol. 27, Issue #1, pg. 71-75.

Review by: Linda Heun, Ph.D. <lheun@aacom.org>

The authors present a new grid designed to facilitate understanding of qualitative research methodologies and appraisal of articles in medicine and medical education. The grid, which has 12 items, each of which are divided into introduction, methods, results, discussion, and conclusion, is presented. The authors describe how the application of appraisal criteria in qualitative research, while similar to that of quantitative research, are applied differently because of the assumptions and purposes of qualitative research.
