Developing an Outcome-Focused Core Curriculum

David Newble et al.

Medical Education
July 2005, Vol. 39, Issue #7, pg. 655-656.

Review by: Linda Heun, Ph.D. <lheun@aacom.org>

The authors describe a process for curriculum development, which moves from a vision statement to the identification of clear student learning outcomes. While not using a full problem-based learning approach, the core curriculum is fully integrated and is structured around clinical problems. Like Brown University and the University of Dundee, this school also provides a specific framework for the curriculum. The main feature is that the content is organized by two vertical themes: clinical competence and the underpinning medical sciences. You can see this framework at http://www.shef.ac.uk/~dme/curriculum/curriculum_map_2003.pdf . Using this template the article includes an example of a completed problem blueprint for seizures.
