The author looks ahead to the challenges facing medical education research and draws lessons from health services research as both are tied to government funding and a call for evidence-based policy and practice. He suggests that medical education research is far behind and should move, as did health services research, to:
- more sophisticated research methodologies
- increased financial support for research
- opportunities for developing research skills
- development of research-supportive infrastructure, and
- movement toward collaborative research across schools and program.
