E. Driessen, C. Van Der Vleuten, et al.

Medical Education
February 2005, Vol. 39, Issue #2, pg. 214-220.

Review by: Linda Heun, Ph.D. <lheun@aacom.org>

The authors describe the application of qualitative research criteria to the assessment of portfolio information. This approach preserve the flexibility, personal orientation and authenticity of the qualitative information contained in such tools. Essential elements of the process were:

  • feedback cycles during the development of the portfolio so that final recommendations were not a surprise
  • establishing a balance between the mentor roles of coach and assessor
  • student involvement in decisions to promote buy-in and the expression of alternative viewpoints
The authors describe the implementation of a case study using five qualitative research strategies: triangulation, prolonged engagement, member checking, audit trail and dependability audit.
