Teaching the Psychosocial Aspects of Care in the Clinical Setting: Practical Recommendations

David Kern et al.

Academic Medicine
January 2005, Vol. 80, Issue #1, pg. 8-20.

Review by: Linda Heun, Ph.D. <lheun@aacom.org>

The authors note that, while communication skills and the psychosocial aspects of patient care are typically taught in medical school, evidence shows that they are not reinforced in clinical training. They present the results of an iterative process that was based in scientific evidence, educational theory and experience. The article contains practical, expert consensus recommendations for clinical preceptors on how to teach and reinforce learning in this critical area.
